The Stem Cell Veto and Hayworth
The House of Representatives took up Bush's veto of the Stem Cell Research Enhancement Bill. As expected, the veto override failed, more than fifty votes short. cpmaz has been covering this over at Random Musings.
Take a look at the Roll Call vote. Notice a familiar Republican Arizona name amongst the Nay votes? Well, you would recognize five of them, as Kolbe was the only Republican to vote for the bill.
But only one name interests me: J.D. Hayworth.
AZ-05 is not a socially conservative district. Scottsdale, while heavily Republican, isn't a stronghold of religious radicals or evangelicals. If only some polling on stem cell research was done here in Arizona. I would expect overwhelming support! The scientific potential almost can't be measured.
So what's your excuse, J.D.? The blastocysts need your protection? Why don't you use your time to protect real people? What's your excuse?

I think that even if CD5-specific polling existed for the stem-cell issue, JD would still have voted against the stem cell bill and overriding the veto. While he has never been close to being a moderate, he has become an a total extremist recently.
Whether this is due to personal preference or because Harry Mitchell's wide support from Independents and centrist Republicans, I don't know.
Of course, it could be both.
